We started out defining what does ‘One Flesh’ mean. We looked at the what the Scriptures says about Adam that ‘they were male and female’. Paul in 1 Corinthians 15:45, says; “45 In fact, the Tanakh says so: Adam, the first man, became a living human being; but the last “Adam” has become a life-giving Spirit”. Jesus in His final act was to become the Last Adam hence having the capacity to have a Spiritual Male and Female body.
Now this next thought has just recently become real to me, and I want to share it here. Given that all believers {Old Testament and New Testament}, are considered the Body of Christ and Jesus Christ the Head of that Body, how does that all come about? I have a number of Scriptures that cover various parts of this question. I have placed them a group so I can easily refer to them: -
Colossians 1:18 (CJB)*
18. Also he is head of the Body, the Messianic Community-—he is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that he might hold first place in everything.
1 Corinthians 11:3 (CJB)*
3. But I want you to understand that the head of every man is the Messiah, and the head of a wife is her husband, and the head of the Messiah is God.
Ephesians 1:21-23 (CJB)*
21. far above every ruler, authority, power, dominion, or any other name that can be named either in the ‘olam hazeh {this age} or in the ‘olam haba {which (age) is to come}.
22. Also, he has put all things under his feet and made him head over everything for the Messianic Community, 23. which is his body, the full expression of him who fills all creation.
Romans 12:4-6 (CJB)*
4. For just as there are many parts that compose one body, but the parts don’t all have the same function; 5. so there are many of us, and in union with the Messiah we comprise one body, with each of us belonging to the others. 6. But we have gifts that differ, and which are meant to be used according to the grace that has been given to us. If your gift is prophecy, use it to the extent of your trust.
- • From Colossians 1:18, Jesus Christ is the Head of the Body, the Messianic Community—the Church.
- • From 1 Corinthians 11:13; Paul is speaking in reference to the relationship between a husband and a wife. Paul makes to compassion to the Church and Christ. The Head of every Man is Jesus Christ, the head of the wife is her husband, and the Head of Jesus Christ is God our Father.
- • From Ephesians 1:23; God “has put all things under” his feet – Jesus’s feet and has “made him” – Jesus – “head over everything for the Messianic Community”.
- • From Romans 12:4-6: Paraphrased: - there are many parts of the one body although they different functions all work together and are in union with Jesus the Messiah.
What am I trying to say?
Jesus the Last Adam – consisting of Himself and the Bride, the Church. The Church consisting of all Believers with many functions. I need to make a point here that maybe, should have been made earlier. In God’s economy there is neither Male nor Female, just the functioning parts that work together. Those who have had the Born-Again experience, their spirit has been exchanged with the Spirit of Christ, are part of His Spiritual Body.
This group includes all Old Testament Patriarchs who are in Heaven awaiting to get their New Spiritual Body once the Born-Again saints to have their number complete, along with the rest of the saints that have died. When Jesus returns to ‘catch the Church away’ the end of the age those of the Believers that are still living on the earth will have their bodies changed to be gathered with the rest of Saints to be ever with Our Lord Jesus.
I will recap what I have presented in this Study.
When we look at the One Flesh experience although it may seem straightforward at first there is a depth of understanding behind this phenomenon.
A husband and wife are considered by God as being in a One Flesh relationship, one Body. When we consider how we as Believers relate to Jesus Christ there is a One Flesh relationship, one Body, one Church, and The Bride.
[Note: I need to add here this thought - The Body, The Church, and The Bride are different aspects of the same thing. This 'phenomenon' is one that exists in the Spiritual dimension which allows all believers no matter where they are to coexist. They operate outside of time and space.]
The individual Believer in relation to Christ is a Joint heir in much the same way as a husband and wife are generally considered as having joint ownership of their possessions. The only difference in our relationship with Christ is we come with complete bankruptcy which, He totally clears all of it and He gives us His absolute abundance and we have equal ownership of this.
What is my closing thought here?
When a Believer contemplates how do they relate to Jesus Christ in his act of redemption these thoughts need to be drawn together. In considering Jesus we need to see Him as the Last Adam. Just as the First Adam was a being that had the capacity to have both parts of being One Flesh. So it is with Jesus, that when a Believer comes into relationship with Jesus, they become part of the Church which is His Body, His Bride. This all has its completeness in the Spiritual realm. The Believer has become a New Creation. This is because the old life force – the spirit from Adam, which is given through their parents, is taken out. A New Spirit from Christ comes into regenerate that person into a New Creation.
Each individual Believer has singular relationship with Jesus because they ‘share’ the same Spirit and hence are a Child of God. At the same time the Believer has a One Flesh relationship with Christ being part of the Body of Christ. That Body of Christ operates as The Bride.
As I said earlier what I have just related might be hard to accept at first. I ask that you don’t totally reject this but allow some time to let it settle with so you can receive the spirit of what I have presented.
